Earlier this Spring I put my name on my sorority’s babysitting list. Now that Summer is approaching I am getting at least two e-mails day from families in the Highland Park area looking for summer nanny’s. Coming from a small town I had never heard of such a thing. On average, the kids ages in all the e-mails range from about age two to age six and every one so far has had two children or more. I understand needing help during the day if both the parents are at work or something but this last e-mail just through me for a loop. The mother was looking for somebody to fly out to the Bahamas with the family for the month of June. Apparently every summer they move down there for the month of June and are looking for a girl to help take care of the kids during the day as well at night. The nanny would get one day off a week as well as a weekend if friends were in town and such.
As this job would be so much fun I have to kind of wonder what parenthood is coming to these days. To be at the beach with your husband and two children for a month, you would think that one would not need help taking care of the kid’s right? No wonder our generation and the young children growing up now have more mental issues as well as bad relationships with their parents. And whatever happened to Moms wanting to raise and teach their children the lessons in life? One of my friends here at SMU comes from a family of five where she is the second oldest. Her younger brother was practically raised by their nanny and the mom finally knew it was time to step in and help raise the son when he started to have an Argentinean accent like the nanny. It is stories such as these two that really make me question the future of parenthood and our society.
