A Message to a Friend

I have a friend in which I find very interesting. I would love to hear more of his opinions and thoughts on certain topics so I said this here https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=1358079246469952947&postID=1667218383977145971&page=1

The Bush Library

I always assumed that the Bush Library would be here at SMU just because we're in Texas and Laura Bush went to school here. But I did not realize that it was not official until just a few days ago when President Turner made the announcement. I think it is really exciting because not only will it add on to the much accomplished campus we have already with The Meadows Museum and all, but I also believe that it will bring a lot of “good” attention to the school at a time when most of the publicity has been about the various alcohol/drug-related student deaths that have occurred in the past few years. I heard that it was to be finished by sometime in 2009. Being a first-year who will graduate in 2011, I find this very exciting because not only will we be the centennial class, but we will also have the attraction of this new library that will benefit the school as well as the city of Dallas and I’m sure Fort Worth.

I have a friend that works part-time in the admissions building and he mentioned how eventually the school plans to have the main entrance to the school be moved over to University Blvd./Street where the library will sit on the corner along with North Central. Though it will be years I’m sure until this happens, I found it very interesting because the entrance to the school right now is already so beautiful. The Bush Library will obviously out way that beauty in terms of importance though.

One last comment that I wish I could speak more about but cannot just because I lack knowledge on the subject…As I was walking by A Daily Campus newsstand today, the details of the Bush Library were located on the front page. In the bottom right corner I noticed an article discussing how a certain group of Methodists were attempting to go to court to not have the library either at that location or not at all, something along those lines. I did not have time to read the article so I would be very interested to see if any of y’all know what that is about just because I think its very odd.

Narcissism on SMU Campus

Personally I think its ridiculous that so many college students think they're better than everyone else just because of who they are. Here is the link I commented on the blog: http://dontdancesofast.blogspot.com/

Happiness Does Exist

In English we have obviously been reading a lot about today’s society and whether or not our culture is a happy one. It seems to me that everything is always negative in the papers and on the news channels as well as what we read in class for our daily discussions. As a college student, I do feel as though I am in my own little bubble that is not in the “real world” at times. When walking to class, all I see are groups of people chatting, laughing and most likely having a good time together. But these are not the images displayed on the evening news of America and its’ citizens, instead they are of war, lost values, depression and so many more.

When walking into my dorm room tonight I turned on the television to see what was going on in the world. Instead of switching to the news however, I kept it on “ABC Family” because “America’s Funniest Home Videos” was on. This has always been a favorite of mine to watch with friends because I always die laughing even if it the stupidest home video. While watching I realized I hadn’t written my second blog and didn’t really know what I should write about. I immediately made the connection between the T.V. show and what we have been discussing in class about happiness in the world, but particularly in American culture. Even though there is so much bad present in the world today, these home videos showed families and friends having fun with one another as well as laughing and just being together. There is still some good left out there today, its just a shame we aren’t able to see it transferred to the media.
